When it comes to weight training, we all had to start somewhere. We read blogs, watched youtube videos, and asked our buddies at the gym. Some of the advice we were given actually helped, but some of it was bullshit. Some advice might have been given from someone who was not natural as well and that advice would not apply to you. Some of the advice was probably handed down from other gym bros who have no clue what they are talking about.
Either way, we’ve compiled a list of the worst weight training tips we’ve ever been given. You might still believe some of them in which case you we’re here to tell you otherwise.

1. Squatting is bad for your knees
2. You shouldn’t squat below parallel
3. Your knees should never go past your toes when squatting
4. You shouldn’t bring the bar down to your chest on bench press
5. Bench pressing is bad for your shoulders
6. You should never do military presses behind your head
7. You should never do weighted ab exercises
8. You should train abs only once a week because they are like other muscle groups and need time to recover
9. You should only train 1 body part each day in order to absolutely destroy the muscle until next week
10. You have to train to failure on every single set otherwise you’re a bitch
11. Monday is international chest day
12. You should do supersets and dropsets every set in order to exhaust the muscle
13. You should only take 30 seconds to 1 minute in between sets
14. Resting too long will cause you to lose all your gains
15. Your life should revolve around the gym
16. Machines are better than free weights because they’re safer
17. The free weights is the “guys” section of the gym
18. You should never do crossfit because they all have bad form
19. You should try to “confuse” the muscle by using different training techniques
20. You should never wear a lifting belt
21. You should always wear a lifting belt to protect your back
22. You should never train with a novice lifter because they’ll slow you down
23. You shouldn’t deadlift because it’s bad for your back
24. You should never train more than X days in a row
25. You shouldn’t train 6 days a week because that’s overtraining
26. You should switch up your workouts every time in order to confuse the muscle
27. You should never cheat in order to get the weight up
28. You should never do crossfit because it sucks
29. It’s impossible to lose weight and get stronger at the same time
30. You should only lift to get “toned” and not build muscle
31. Lift lighter weights in order to get toned
32. You don’t need to train legs
33. Training over an hour is overtraining
34. Isolation exercises are the only way to go
35. Not doing a full range of motion keeps tension on the muscle
36. You should never go heavy
37. You have to go heavy all the time
38. You can turn fat into muscle
39. You should do cardio before you lift in order to burn off your glycogen storage
40. Doing lots of sit-ups will melt the fat off your stomach so you’ll have a 6 pack
41. 10-12 reps is the only way to build muscle
42. Bodybuilder’s don’t go heavy so neither should you
43. Athletes should only do calisthenics
44. You need to keep your heart-rate up the entire time you lift in order to burn more calories
45. Cardio burns more calories than weight training
46. You should never do cardio when bulking
47. Cardio “melts away” fat
48. You should never do high intensity cardio because it’s catabolic
49. Bodybuilders do steady state cardio and so should you
50. You should never stretch before working out because it’s going to tear up all your muscle fibers
